Top Terroir: Elaine and Scott Harris' Producer Picks

On Top Terroir, we ask a different wine expert who his or her favorite wine producers currently are. This week, Elaine and Scott Harris, certified sommeliers and founders of VinoLasVegas, share their picks:

Producer: Ampelos Cellars

Location: Sta. Rita Hills, California, USA

Why? Owners Peter and Rebecca Work believe that great wines are made in the vineyard. Their wines are organic, sustainable and biodynamic and have earned the very difficult SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certification. The Sta Rita Hills has a unique east–west orientation that allows the maritime influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean to settle into the vineyards, and makes it an ideal AVA to produce world class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. The Rho Pinot Noir, Sta Rita Hills, Ampelos Vineyard 2006 is a classic example of this very special area. It has a nose of cherry and spices that goes on to a palate of dark berries and cherries and just a hint of smoke and spice for a smooth long finish.

Producer: Margerum Wine Company

Location: Santa Barbara County, California, USA

Why? In 2001, Winemaker Doug Margerum started Margerum Wine Company producing small lots of Santa Barbara County Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris. He as has always been committed to creating handcrafted wines using the highest quality grapes that are indicative of the terroir where they are grown. Margerum Rhone Blend M5, Santa Ynez Valley 2007 is a blend of 48% Syrah, 31% Grenache, 10% Mouvedre 2% Counoise and 2% Cinsault. Also included is 6% Genesis of M5 (a co-fermentation of everything but Syrah). This very special blend shows off his craft and is affordable and pleasing to the palate.

Producer: Okanagan Estate and Vineyards

Location: Oroville, Washington, USA

Why? Located just five miles south of the Canadian/US border, the Okanogan Valley is well known for its Reisling, Gewurztraminer and of course Ice Wines. Under the direction of winemaker Mike Buckmiller, this small family owned estate produces Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and of course Ice wines. Ice wines can be found in most cold climate areas all over the world and are known to be pricey. The Okanogan Riesling Ice Wine Orchard Hill Vineyard 2006 is a very sweet dessert wine. This Ice wine is pretty complex with flavors of mango, peach and other tropical fruits that end in a long finish. Only 83 cases of this particular vintage were produced, and like most Ice wines, is a great finish to a meal or just for dessert.

A Separate Reality

We are not meant to come together, not any more than sun and moon were meant to come together, or sea and land. We are sun and moon, dear friend we are sea and land. It is not our purpose to become each other it is to recognize each other, to learn to see the other and honor him for what he is: each the other's opposite and complement.

Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.

I have lived with several Zen masters—all of them cats.

Introduction

The author has been able to describe delicately the malaise that often is contained in each of us. Faith's character needs to leave the nest to confront the insecurities that have always influenced her personality, preventing her from living a full life. Only the constant love of her grandfather and brother allow her to make a choice and rediscover the dormant Faith who cannot emerge. Through the character's feelings our soul is understood.

A Separate Reality is the mirror of what we often see around us, surrounded by devastating shallowness. Selene Rossi talks through the protagonist, with the voice of every person suffering from mood disorders, with a light and smooth pen that leads us magically into a female introspective layer. A modern novel adhering to the demands of our time, written, conceived and designed to support, to expand and shed light on our fears and on lost balance. Kudos to the author for this beautiful devoted text!

Prologue

From an early age I proved to be a lonely child, but for the more or less long periods I have also been an outgoing child, I made friends at school, I played with the other kids, growing up I started to go out with my peers, but there were always other times, moments when all of this bothered me, sometimes I preferred to be alone, read, cuddle with my dog and my cat, My Cat so to speak, because it was he who adopted me, showing up in my garden as if he was the owner. Yes them. my closest loves, you can feel the purity, innocence and unconditional love of these creatures. But these are the times I am most sad, too reflexive, obsessed with the meaning of life, in these moments I am not always sad, maybe the opposite. thoughtful, reading allows me to create my own opinions but an answer never arrives and this, in the end, leads to melancholy. I live two realities, slipping from serenity, from illusion to melancholy, from my passions, emotions, desires to that evil darkness that prevents me to just survive.

I've often heard my mother, psychologists and psychiatrists, friends and acquaintances say: "Wake up!
